I am a Fee-Only personal financial planner and advisor. But please be careful, because the terms “financial planner” and “financial advisor” are used (and sometimes abused) by financial service providers to mean many different things. Often it seems that every insurance agent and stock broker has a card printed with “financial planner” or “financial advisor” on it. Let me go on record as saying that there is a place for insurance agents and stock brokers, but there is a big difference between what they do and what I do. The question then becomes “Well, Barry, what’s the difference? “

I’m not a stock broker, an investment manager, a tax accountant, or an insurance agent. What I do is different from those people, and there is a lot more to it. Ask yourself this: how can you achieve any financial or life goals (especially the big ones) if the people trying to help you are all working in isolation? How can you get where you want to go if your advisors have incentives to promote products and services that maximize their income and not yours. It’s a self-defeating set-up at best. As a Fee-Only advisor, I coordinate and integrate all pieces of your financial life into a path that will lead to your financial freedom---whatever that represents to you--whether it’s having enough money to retire to the mountains and paint, to travel the world while your kids are still in college, or even to change jobs or professions, but continue to work. The key to making this happen is a comprehensive, holistic approach focused on you and your goals, not mine.
